It’s a casino, so Parx Casino Bensalem naturally wants you to visit and gamble your money. But they don’t want anyone to gamble with their health. That’s why Parx is running a special Breast Cancer Awareness Month Fundraiser, highlighted this past weekend by free breast cancer screenings.
On Saturday, the Penn Medicine Mobile Mammography Van was on-site at Parx Casino Bensalem – located between Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Trenton, New Jersey – providing breast cancer screenings for women 40 and older for free, no insurance required.
In addition, the casino announced a $10,000 donation to Penn Medicine’s Basser Center for BRCA, the “breast cancer gene.”
The efforts were inspired by Parx Casino’s Director of Advertising & Public Relations Carrie Nork Minelli, who found out she has the BRCA1 mutation, which gives her about five times the normal risk of breast cancer. She underwent a “prophylactic” (preventative) double mastectomy this year.
“Learning that I carried the BRCA1 gene mutation changed my life,” Nork Minelli said in a blog post on Parx Casino’s Facebook page. “Through genetic testing, education and ultimately surgery, I was able to take control of my future.”
“This not only let me take control of my life, but it gave me a new personal mission to spread awareness and encourage other women to get tested,” she added. “I am beyond grateful to Parx Casino’s leadership for stepping forward to support Penn Medicine’s Basser Center. Their commitment to advancing research and providing life-saving resources will have a lasting impact for so many individuals and families.”
Philadelphia resident Pat Hemingway, who attended the breast cancer screening event on Saturday, told North Penn Now, “Don’t wait. Go get your mammogram. Be cautious, be ahead of the game; the quicker you find something out, the better off you are.”
The $10,000 donation to the Basser Center coincided with Parx Casino’s “Spin for Strength” promotion last Friday, in which eligible guests got to spin a special Pink Mega Wheel for free slot plays of up to $500 and a Breast Cancer Awareness Month t-shirt.
Throughout the month of October, Parx Casino is serving up The Pink Lady cocktails at all restaurants and bars, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Basser Center.
