ACR Poker ran a tournament on Tuesday night where finishing one place off the money was the best result on the board. The Moneymaker Bubble Effect cost $0.10, guaranteed $10,000, and handed a $2,650 Venom seat to whoever busted on the bubble.

The idea came from a hand played three weeks earlier in Las Vegas. Chris Moneymaker, the accountant credited with starting the poker boom, bubbled the WSOP 2026 Main Event.

He called off his last 100,000 chips playing a board that had paired twice. ACR built a promotion around the worst finish in poker, and the seat it awarded plays for real money in August.

The Hand That Bubbled a World Champion

Day 4 of the Main Event began with 1,389 players and seven eliminations left before the money. It took three hands. Six players hit the rail almost immediately, leaving a single bust-out between the field and a payday.

Moneymaker opened to 17,000 from the hijack with :jh: :9d:. Antonio Vargas three-bet to 42,000 holding :ah: :as:, and Moneymaker called.

The flop came :8h: :7s: :7d: and Vargas continued for 20,000. The :7c: turn put trips on the board, Vargas fired 45,000, and Moneymaker called again.

Then the :8s: river filled the board in. Sevens full of eights was now the hand both players held, and Vargas moved in for Moneymaker’s last 100,000 or so.

Moneymaker called. Vargas tabled his aces for the higher full house, and with tournament boss Jack Effel calling the room to attention, the 2003 world champion was out on the stone bubble.

Three Players Busted on the Same Hand

Moneymaker was not the only casualty. Hand-for-hand play produced a second round of all-ins, and three of them lost at the same moment.

The trio split two min-cashes worth $30,000 between them, taking $10,000 each. Everyone still seated had just locked up $15,000, according to the official WSOP payout structure.

There was one more twist. WSOP tradition hands the bubble finisher a consolation prize, and this year that meant a $25,000 seat in the WSOP Paradise Main Event.

The three busted players flipped for it. Seitbekov won. Moneymaker lost that one too.

How the Moneymaker Bubble Effect Worked

ACR’s answer was to invert the whole thing. On Tuesday 28 July the room ran a $0.10 tournament with a $10,000 guarantee and one unusual line in the prize structure.

The player eliminated directly on the money bubble collected a $2,650 Venom seat. Everyone else played for the guarantee in the normal way.

The Watch Party Came First

Moneymaker joined ACR’s Twitch channel at 7:00pm ET, 90 minutes before cards went in the air, to react to ESPN‘s Main Event coverage. ACR hosted that stream itself. ESPN neither organised nor sponsored it.

The timing is not an accident. Under the WSOP move to ESPN primetime, the Main Event now reaches an audience far wider than the poker press, and hands from Day 4 are still finding new viewers three weeks on.

Where That $2,650 Venom Seat Plays Next

The prize is not a token. $2,650 is the exact buy-in for both of ACR’s Dual Mystery Bounty Venoms, which run from 13 August to 2 September.

Together they are the largest pair of Venoms ACR has run, and more than 1,500 seats are guaranteed through satellites. The bubble finisher joins a big qualified field rather than a thin room of direct buy-ins.

From an $86 Satellite to a Ten-Cent Tournament

The symmetry is the point. Moneymaker reached the 2003 Main Event through an $86 online satellite, outlasted 838 players and won $2.5 million.

That result pulled a generation of recreational players onto the felt and handed the industry a phrase it still uses. The whole arc sits in Chris Moneymaker’s route from satellite to title.

The Bubble Effect borrows the shape and reverses the ending. A tiny entry, an outsized prize, and a finish nobody sets out to reach.

What Happens to the Seat Now

The Bubble Effect has run, but the ticket it produced has not been cashed. The Venoms begin on 13 August, which gives whoever busted at exactly the wrong moment on Tuesday two weeks to think about it.

ACR has spent its 25th anniversary year building promotions around cheap entries and disproportionate prizes, and this was the sharpest example yet.
