Why the English Premier League Remains One of the World’s Most-Watched Football Competitions

Premier League has a truly worldwide viewership outside of England. This has come through a combination of well-established clubs, high-level matches and international televised coverage to create the most internationally viewed football competition in the world.

Global Broadcasting and Match Accessibility

Premier League football is broadcast to 189 countries. According to Premier League statistics for the 2024/25 season, 1.87 billion fans are exposed to at least one Premier League match via media on a weekly basis. There is a Premier League betting page (in Estonian: Inglismaa kõrgliiga) which lists all upcoming Premier League matches and their betting markets. There are also pages for results, betting and statistics pages as well as betting results. Each individual game has markets for the result, total goals and handicaps.

Clubs are also promoted between games via digital and highlight content. In Estonia, Premier League broadcasts are received on Go3 via Baltic broadcast agreements from 2024.

Competitive Clubs and Unpredictable Results

The bigger clubs such as Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Manchester City all attract fans from across the world. However, Brighton and Brentford have shown that smaller clubs can defy the bigger clubs through good tactics and recruitment.

Aside from the championship itself, there are several other elements to competition in the Premier League:

  • Relegation and promotion: Three clubs are relegated from the Premier League each year
  • Entry into European competitions: A club’s position in the league affects their chances of entering European competition
  • Different attacking and pressing styles: There are many different styles of attack and pressing in the Premier League
  • Financial implications of relegation: A relegation can have massive financial implications for a club

Even mid-table derbies can have implications for a club’s entry into Europe. Clubs just above mid-table also face a significant competition.

Broadcasting Revenue and International Talent

The English Premier League owns the rights to show its competitions as a bundle. Money made then returns to the individual clubs, and the clubs can then spend this money on improving stadiums, player development and training grounds or on recruiting new players.

In July 2025, the English Premier League revealed the share distributions for the 2024/25 competitive season and also revealed over £550 million invested into the rest of English football.

There were 64 foreign players in the competition. These players attract foreign fans but also fans of those players from their own domestic football. Therefore, foreign fans are made more aware of the English clubs.

How Large Is the Premier League Audience?

Broadcast penetration and audience size are two distinct metrics. The league’s official 2024/25 data illustrates the scale of its international presence.

Audience Figures from the 2024/25 Season

The numbers relate to far more than just viewers on television. Stadium attendance indicates how regularly clubs fill their stadiums , and UK viewing figures are for both live matches and match packs. These metrics capture different facets of how people kept up with the league during the season.

Indicator Official figure
Countries receiving broadcasts 189
Potential television reach 900 million homes
Weekly media followers 1.87 billion
UK viewers of live games and highlights 33.9 million
Average stadium occupancy 98.8%

The UK number combines live broadcasts and BBC highlights. Television potential reach is a measure of access to coverage and not indicative of people watching a particular game.

And stadium attendance is yet another factor. Venues such as Anfield and Old Trafford are regular hosts for international broadcasts.

The 2026/27 Season and Television Scheduling

The season starts on the 21st of August 2026 and ends on the 30th of May 2027. Arsenal play the newly promoted Coventry City in the opening match. Ipswich Town and Hull City also return to the league.

Games are spread over a number of TV windows. The timing of these games also depends on European fixtures and on TV windows.

The following are the three influences on the calendar:

  1. TV selection can impact the timing of games.
  2. European fixtures can impact domestic fixtures.
  3. International windows can impact domestic fixtures.

There are currently 215 live games available on Sky Sports per season in the current UK TV arrangement. There are an additional 52 games available on TNT Sports.

Why the League Matters in Estonia

Estonia is +2 (GMT) of the UK all year. So a league game in England on Saturday at 15:00 (3 PM) will be taking place at 17:00 (5 PM) in Estonia. All matches broadcast on GO3 are also shown on the English service. Information on all matches, results and analysis will be available on the English service. International broadcast will enable fans to follow their English sides in the competition.

The distribution system, financial backing and existing rivalries all continue to benefit the Premier League from an international perspective. This season there is a lot for Estonian fans to follow. Some teams are chasing a title while others are merely aiming to remain in the Premier League. The changing of the tables can turn matches that were insignificant in August into significant ones by spring.
