WPT officials anticipate a great festival
We reached out to WPT Media Relations Manager Eric Lusch with a few questions about the 2024 WPT Prime Taiwan festival, and here’s what he had to say:
The festival starts in a few days. What are your expectations for this year? Do you think it will be possible to exceed the 2023 Championship Event tally of 1,359 entries?
We are excited for the festival to get underway. Last year saw such a positive turnout. With some other recent events being canceled in surrounding regions, I think the demand may be higher than usual. But it is still to be foreseen if we can break any past records.
We see that there will be tournaments with different modalities, satellites and even a freeroll. Which ones cannot be missed? Which ones are the most popular among the players?
The WPT Prime Taiwan Championship event is of course the cannot-miss tournament of the festival. There will be multiple satellites to get into the Championship event, as well as satellites into other events like the Mystery Bounty and Championship Warm Up event. The Championship Warm Up is the pick of the side events. Priced at only TWD 10,000 (USD $304) the three day structure provides tremendous play time.
Last year’s edition saw champions from eight different countries. Is it common to have players in attendance from so many countries and continents?
It was incredible to see the variety of countries represented in the champions, and players, at the festival in 2023. Taiwan is a desirable travel destination and the CTP and Asia Poker Arena is accommodating to all so the diversity across the board is not too surprising.
What can newcomers expect at the 2024 WPT Prime Taiwan festival? What places can they visit in the city on a day off?
Firstly, the Asia Poker Arena in Taipei; it’s the largest permanent poker venue in Asia, able to hold up to 60 poker tables. So players can expect an excellent venue with very well run poker tournaments. Taipei and its surroundings offer so many options for those players wanting to explore.
The food options to start are great and very affordable. Within Taipei City, Taipei 101 — at one time the tallest building in the world — is a great option to visit, and the various night markets are very popular. Raohe Street Night Market is my favourite. For those wanting to take a full day off, one recommendation is booking a day trip to visit Yehliu Geopark & Jiufen Old Street.
2023 WPT Prime Taiwan Highlights
Last year’s festival featured 46 events and the champions came from eight different countries: Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Singapore, Australia and the United States. The WPT Prime Taiwan Championship event had 1,359 entries and distributed $1.2M in prize money among the top 173 players. The grand champion was Seonguk Huh from South Korea, who earned the biggest prize of his career: $208K.
Can last year’s attendance be surpassed? From which country will this year’s winner emerge? We will find out in just a few days.
