This win was Eibinger’s fifth Triton title, lifting him into the seven-man group of players with the same number who are all chasing Jason Koon with 12 wins.

All-in-all, we can say this was a great start to the WSOP Paradise series for Matthias Eibinger.

Action Recap

Only 12 players returned to the playing hall for Day 2, Stephen Chidwick leading as he so often does.

Could the Brit snatch his third bracelet and inch even closer to the top spot on the all-time money list? Bryn Kenney is only four million dollars in front.

Biao Ding was first to leave the official final table of six. Having only just doubled through Ben Lamb, he ran kings into Eibinger’s straight to head to the rail with a prize of $412,000.

Chidwick was now the short stack and lasted only minutes longer than Biao Ding when he lost his remaining chips to Eibinger. Only a $526,500 payday but it does bring him that bit closer to Kenney’s record winnings.

Eibinger then dished out another elimination to extend his lead. Richard Gryko was the unlucky soul to whiff his draw in the face of the Austrian’s aces. But that earned him $809,000 for fourth place to take his career earnings past the $6 million mark.

Now the intensity level ramped up several notches during three-handed play. Dylan Weisman was now chip leader but a single hand against Canada’s Michael Watson changed the direction of the event completely.

Weisman had all his chips in the middle with A♥ Q♦ Q♣ 5♦ while Watson held A♣ K♣ J♥ 3♠.

The first four community cards came down as 2♥ 9♣ 8♠ 5♣ and Weisman was ready to head to heads-up play with a massive lead. But poker is as fickle as can be and the K♦ on the river  flipped the script to hand the chips to Watson.

And so Weisman would head back to his room to decide if the $809,000 prize for third place was enough to soften his mood.

A chop was agreed before the heads-up battle began to leave only $110K difference between the payouts.

And it wasn’t much of a battle to speak of. Eibinger finished off his opponent in quick time with Watson collecting $1,459,360 for what is his sixth runner-up finish in a World Series of Poker event.

Speaking after his win, Eibinger said:

“It’s definitely a very special victory. It just makes me hungry for more. But I also know it’s going to be a bit tough because I’m not hunting them and playing a full schedule in Las Vegas during the summer, so I only get some shots in the few high rollers that I play each year. I’m super happy that it worked out.

“It’s fantastic because I win one tournament and now I have the WSOP title and another Triton title, which is really important to me. That keeps me motivated to hunt those titles.

“I’m just going to play everything that I wanted to play. But now I see it more relaxed. I already have the big score, the big lock-up to start with. So it doesn’t matter whether the flips are going my way or not, I’ll just be relaxed and enjoy it.”
