Juvenile, but still funny
The WSOP+ app, used to register for World Series of Poker events, keep track of the progress of tournaments, and more, has gotten rave reviews in these early days of the summer poker festival. One feature that the app’s developers will certainly be updating, though, is the one that allows players to use whatever name they want on the app. And we all have Christopher Zollo to thank.
Zollo registered for Event #2: $500 Industry Employees No-Limit Hold’em, under the name “SuckMe69”. This might have gone unnoticed, if not for the fact that Zollo not only made Day 2 of the tournament, but got all the way to heads-up play against Phovieng Keokham.
Unfortunately for all of our entertainment, the WSOP powers-that-be made Zollo change his monicker on the app, so it just became his boring, every day name.
So close, so close
So, in summary, it was funny that someone called himself “SuckMe69” on the WSOP+ app when everybody else just used their real names and then went on to get to heads-up. But Zollo was so very close to becoming one of the most legendary players in World Series of Poker history.
Heads-up and trailing, Zollo looked down and saw his hole cards: 6-9. It was fate. There were no two better cards he could have had at that moment to get himself back in the game. He opened the betting and after Keokham re-raised, Zollo decided the poker gods were on his side and moved all-in against his opponent’s A-Q.
And there it was. The flop produced a 9, giving Mr. SuckMe69 the lead with two cards to go. He was a huge favorite now. He may have had to change his name in the app, but the poker gods knew who he really was.
Except for the fact that the turn was a Queen, the river bricked, and Phovieng Keokham won the tournament.
We almost had one of the greatest highlights in WSOP history, but hey, it doesn’t always work out. And for Phovieng Keokham, that Zollo went for the meme play was the best result he could have dreamed up, as it gave him his first WSOP gold bracelet.
