As we speak, the 2025 Major League Baseball (MLB) postseason is in full swing. After the Wild Card round, we are currently in the midst of the Divisional Playoff series as the teams determine who will be the representatives of the National and American Leagues. It seemed like a suitable time to look back at our predictions from earlier this year – suffice it to say that, right this moment, both of our picks for the World Series are still alive!
Nice Run in the National League
The highlight of our selections in the National League is that we picked every division champion. In March, we selected the Philadelphia Phillies as the winners of the NL East, the Milwaukee Brewers as the victors in the NL Central, and the Los Angeles Dodgers as the champions of the NL West. Overall, we were not exceptionally good, however; the three divisional winners were the only correct selections.
There were plenty of other misses in our prognostications. We gave a bit too much credence to what the Pittsburgh Pirates were doing in the Central, predicting them to finish second; they would finish last. We expected that the New York Mets would make the playoffs, only to watch them come up short on the final day of the regular season. We were also disappointed in the performance of both the San Francisco Giants and the Arizona Diamondbacks. We predicted both teams would make the playoffs but instead saw the San Diego Padres thump them on a playoff run themselves.
We are going to take some pride in our sweep of the divisions here, though, because you’re going to see how badly we got the American League next!
A Disappointment in the American League
For as good as we were in the National League, we failed in predicting the American League. Out of the three division winners, we only got one right, the Seattle Mariners (although we did get our pick in the AL Central, the Detroit Tigers, into the playoffs as runner-up to the Cleveland Guardians) in the AL West. Perhaps our biggest embarrassment in our 2025 MLB predictions was in our choices for the AL East, however.
We will offer our mea culpas here for our choice of the Baltimore Orioles to win the AL East. The ‘Birds never seemed to come to life in 2025 on their way to a DEAD LAST finish in the division. Boston made the playoffs as the final playoff team, while predicting the demise of the New York Yankees was a significant error. The Toronto Blue Jays would tie with the Yankees for the division but won the tiebreaker to take the championship.
Perhaps the best thing we can say about our AL predictions is that we got more of the playoff teams right than we did in the NL. Overall, we picked four of the playoff teams in the AL (Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, and Seattle) and only scored the three division champions in the NL. Thus, for the twelve teams that made the playoffs, we didn’t do too badly in picking seven of the twelve teams correctly.
How Will the Playoffs Go?
So far in the MLB World Series playoffs, we are not doing too badly. In the National League, our prediction of the Los Angeles Dodgers is looking good as they currently lead the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLDS, 2-0. We predicted that to be the Championship Series for the National League, so we are guaranteed to be at least half right. It’s looking like the Milwaukee Brewers are going to be the opponent, as they lead the Chicago Cubs 2-0 in their series.
We predicted the New York Yankees as the representative of the American League, but they have their work cut out for them. Down 2-0 to the Toronto Blue Jays, the Bronx Bombers are going to have to win three consecutive games to make the ALCS. In the other matchup, it is all square at 1-1 with Seattle and Detroit slugging it out.
The League Championship Series matchups begin on October 12, with the World Series tentatively scheduled to start on October 24. At that point, we will have a complete look at how our prognostications went with our MLB predictions in 2025.
