The 2025 World Series of Poker continues to motor along through the steamy June days, but one thing has been determined. Following input from the public, the nominees for the 2025 Poker Hall of Fame have been announced. Ten people have been selected, but only one person will be announced publicly just ahead of the start of WSOP Event #92, the $1,979 Poker Hall of Fame Bounty No-Limit Hold’em, hosted at the Horsehoe Las Vegas and Paris Las Vegas.
Four New Honorees Enter the Mix
Of the ten nominations, four are brand new to the list. The other six nominations have all been chosen multiple times for consideration, but they have yet to earn a spot in poker’s premier institution. The ten nominees are very “poker boom” oriented, as nearly the entirety of the list made their mark during the post-2000 era of the game.
Leading the way for the newbies is the recently passed “Miami” John Cernuto. Cernuto, who was recently tied (by Ari Engel) for all-time cashes in poker history at 597, had a long and successful career in poker, winning nearly $6.5 million in his career. Cernuto was a beast at the WSOP, picking up three WSOP bracelets in the nearly forty years he spent on the felt, and added three final table trips on the World Poker Tour and a singular final table on the European Poker Tour.
The other three newcomers are also freshly eligible for the Poker Hall of Fame, having eclipsed the ‘Chip Reese Rule’ this year. Phil Galfond, Nick Schulman, and Scott Seiver have all reached forty years old this year and received their first nominations for the Poker Hall of Fame. The other six nominees are, in alphabetical order:
Jeremy Ausmus
Ted Forrest
Kathy Liebert
Mike Matusow
Matt Savage
Isai Scheinberg
A Small Crowd to Convince
The ten nominees for the 2025 Poker Hall of Fame will now be examined by the living members of the Poker Hall of Fame and judged for induction. The living members, thirty-two in total, will have to decide which of the ten nominees is worthy of joining them in poker’s immortality ranks, but the exact process is not known. It is part of what some might call “a problem” with the Poker Hall of Fame in that they have made their process too secretive.
In the past, the members (and a selected group of media) placed their votes, with each voter getting ten votes. The voter could disperse those points in whatever manner they wanted, either by giving one person all ten votes or giving a vote each to the ten nominees. Once the votes were cast, the numbers were added up and the person receiving the most votes would be inducted.
Who will be the one chosen by the Hall members? Poker News Daily will examine this separately from this announcement, as today’s announcement from the WSOP is more to honor those who have been chosen to have their moment in the sun. Whoever is inducted this year will join the other Poker Hall of Famers by having their photo added to the WSOP Hall of Fame Poker Room at Horseshoe Las Vegas, where it will hang in honor and perpetuity.
