Quarter-century of poker
Online poker giant PokerStars has announced that the 25th running of the PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) will be September 6-30. That is about all we know for the time being – complete schedule and details will be published in the coming weeks – but it enough for now for players to mark their calendars and cancel all other plans.
Starting this weekend, though, PokerStars is kicking off what it calls the “WCOOP Boot Camp,” a 65-event, two-week poker series designed to “mirror the variety of the WCOOP schedule.” Slated for August 2-17, the WCOOP Boot Camp will feature game types like No-Limit Hold’em, HORSE, 8-Game Mix, Mystery Bounty, and Progressive Knockout. Buy-ins range from $2.20 to $1,050.
There are two Main Events on August 16: the “low” Main Event is a $109 No-Limit Hold’em tournament with a $500,000 guaranteed prize pool, while the “high” version has a $1,050 buy-in and a $300,000 guarantee.
20th anniversary of the Sunday Million
In the same news release, PokerStars also announced the $5 million guaranteed 20th Anniversary Sunday Million. This one is a ten-week phased tournament – basically a tourney with boatloads of starting flights – with daily $109 heats running all the way until September 6.
Players who survive a heat will carry their chip stacks to Phase 2, the Finals. Depending on how many players participate and the payout structure, the money bubble might come during the opening heats, so it could be possible to cash without advancing to Phase 2. Players may enter as many Phase 1 heats as they would like.
For those who want to try to get into a Phase 1 heat a bit cheaper, PokerStars is hosting Special Edition Spin & Go’s starting at $0.75. In said 75-cent Spin & Go’s, the winner-take-all prize will be a $109 Phase 1 Sunday Million ticket 2,000 times out of 1 million. In the $4 buy-in version, the odds of the $109 ticket increase to 1.25% of the time.
Lesser prizes for the Spin & Go’s include Phase 1 satellite tickets at varying buy-in levels.
