If you recall, during the 2025 World Series of Poker, we ran down every state in the U.S., detailing the top three money earners by where the players came from. It was an intriguing listing, with a few surprises, and one astute reader had a thought. “How about doing this for Canada” that reader asked…so we did it! We broke out Part One of this series earlier this week (come on, Northwest and Nunavut Territories!), so settle in if you are from the Great White North as we count down the top players that hail from Canada, by province.
Quebec Claims Non-Ontario Leadership
As we mentioned in Part One, many of the players in the Canadian all-time money leaders hail from the province of Ontario. It would be natural, then, that the second most populous Canadian province, Quebec, would provide some of the other players – and they do. They can claim a former World Champion who leads the province of Quebec in lifetime earnings.
In fifth place on the all-time list of Canadian money leaders, 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event winner Jonathan Duhamel leads the way for the province of Quebec, racking up over $18 million in career earnings. He is going to be in that position for some time, as the closest player to him is nearly twelve million dollars behind him. Eric Afriat has been able to make some moves into the Top Twenty on the Canadian list, but he is still second-best in Quebec behind the former World Champion.
In the third slot on the Quebec standings is a player who has only been around for about six years. Eliot Hudon earned his first cash in November 2019 and used that humble beginning to work his way to the 2022 WPT World Championship. That’s where he has earned the predominance of his $4.8 million in career earnings, but it is still good enough to put him in third place on the all-time money leaders list in the province of Quebec:
1. Jonathan Duhamel (Boucherville, QC), $18,009,547
2. Eric Afriat (Saint-Laurent, QC), $6,293,745
3. Eliot Hudon (Montreal, QC), $4,878,727
Nova Scotia a Surprise Third Best
As one of the smaller provinces in Canada (with a population of slightly more than a million), Nova Scotia has put together an excellent list of players for its top three all-time money leaders. In the first spot for Nova Scotia is Alex Livingston, who also makes it into the Top Ten for Canada outright. Livingston is having an “off year” in 2025, with ‘only’ $389K in earnings, but that has only added to the province-leading $9,739,280 that Livingston has accumulated during his career.
Another familiar name to hardcore poker fans makes the list for Nova Scotia, but he has his work cut out to find Mr. Livingston. Owen Crowe has done quite well in his tournament poker career, racking up just over $3 million in his time on the felt. He has a bit of a lead over the third-place player from Nova Scotia, Cory Carroll, but if someone is going to run at Livingston, it’s going to be Crowe. Here are the top three all-time money leaders for the province of Nova Scotia:
1. Alex Livingston (Halifax, NS), $9,739,280
2. Owen Crowe (Halifax, NS), $3,078,363
3. Cory Carroll (Dartmouth, NS), $1,846,724
BC Brings Trio of Top Pros
British Columbia is known for nearly perfect weather, but it has also got some serious poker players in the province. Leading the way for the province is a player who is two-thirds of the way to poker’s ‘Triple Crown’ of a WSOP bracelet, a World Poker Tour title, and a European Poker Tour championship. Shawn Buchanan captured two of those three (WSOP bracelet in 2019, WPT title in 2007) on his way to the provincial lead with his $7,402,942 in career earnings.
The race is a bit closer here than in some of the other provinces, as Ami Barer sits only three million behind Buchanan in the race for the top. A familiar name to poker fans is currently in third place for British Columbia players, as former hockey player Greg ‘FBT’ Mueller lurks right behind Barer. A decent championship for Mueller – say, a half-million dollars or so? – would push him into second place on the all-time money leaders list for the province of British Columbia:
1. Shawn Buchanan (Vancouver, BC), $7,402,942
2. Ami Barer (Vancouver, BC), $4,090,403
3. Greg Mueller (White Rock, BC), $3,533,910
We have four provinces left on our list, so why don’t we save that for a final segment? Come back in a couple of days to see how the final provinces play out in our list of the all-time money leaders in each of the Canadian provinces.
