Tom Dwan, a familiar face on the Asian high-stakes poker scene, signed this week as a new ambassador for ACR Poker – Americas Cardroom. The player originally from New Jersey in the United States will now represent the brand and host a new streaming game on the platform.

“We’re really excited to bring Tom Dwan aboard,” an ACR representative noted in of the deal. “His bold, daring approach to poker is a great fit with ACR Poker’s mentality and we’re excited that he’ll be working with us to bring big poker to more people, both in the U.S. and around the world.”

Tom Dwan Joins the ACR Poker Team

After starting with a bankroll with $50 in the early 2000s, the 37-year-old Dwan continued climbing the ranks to play in some of the biggest games in the world. He became a Full Tilt ambassador and a regular on shows like High Stakes Poker, NBC’s National Heads-Up Poker Championship, Poker After Dark, and the Million Dollar Cash Game.

Dwan also became a familiar face at high-stakes cash games in Macau and in other Asian events. In 2018, he recorded a massive USD 2.4 million pot in South Korea as part of the Triton Poker Series’ Jeju Cash Game. He topped that recently on the Hustler Club Live stream with a pot of USD 3.1 million. 

At the tournament tables, Dwan has USD 6.5 million in live winnings. Some of that came in Asia, taking runner-up in the 2017 MBP Spring Challenge in Macau for USD 252,153. In 2018 in Jeju, he grabbed sixth place in a Triton Poker Super High Roller Series short deck event for USD 252,320. In 2019, he signed as Triton Ambassador. Dwan has numerous other big finishes in high roller events around the world and is now excited to partnering with ACR.

“I’m really excited to be joining the ACR team,” Dwan said. “CEO Phil Nagy and I share a similar view on online poker and I’m excited to see where this relationship can take us and grow the game for players.”

The ACR roster of ambassadors already includes Chris Moneymaker, Chris Moorman, and Jose “Nacho” Barbero. Dwan is hoping to bring something new to the site and will play using his “Durrrr” username that is well-known among those who played and followed the game during the poker boom of the 2000s.

The new “Durrrr’s Game” will be an ACR-produced cash game featuring Dwan battling it out against other high-profile players. Viewers can expect to see some new formats and features, according to ACR officials.

Debts & Controversy

The news of the signing comes after Dwan has been in the news for less-positive reasons in recent days.  Haralabos Voulgaris, the former director of quantitative research for the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, and poker pro Peter Jetten have accused Dwan of failing to pay back debts that total in the millions of dollars. That drew plenty of criticism of Dwan from other players for not paying them back.

“Imagine owing someone for 12 years, scooping a $3.1 million pot right in front of the guy, him offering you a deal where you can make monthly $10,000 to $30,000 a month payments with zero interest, and then ghosting him while flying private back to whatever rock you crawled out from,” Voulgaris noted on Twitter on March 5.

Jetten had a similar story, noting on Twitter: “Would caution against doing business with Tom Dwan. He’s owed me $226,000 for four years and continues to use delay tactics to avoid payment. He says he’ll pay next week, next Triton Poker stop, etc. but never does.”

Dwan later implied that the debts were “way off” and “all a lie.” He Tweeted that Jetten “wasn’t being fair” on various occasions regarding any debt.
